Top Ten Public Universities’ Review of Bangladesh

Public universities of Bangladesh have great contribution for the country. Every year  a huge number of students complete their HSC and want to admit to the public universities. Bangladesh has around 40 public universities. But all of these universities can not give good education friendly environment. All public universities are funded by government. But all these universities are not highly ranked. So if you want to study in public universities, at first you must know the top public universities. 

 University Grants Commission (UGC) regulates all Bangladesh’s Universities. On the basis of UGC ranking we give a overview on the top ten public universities of Bangladesh.

Public Universities in Bangladesh

1.Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET):

BUET was founded in 1912. It is the best and oldest engineering university in Bangladesh. It is the most prestigious university for Bangladesh. It is situated in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Almost 9740 students are pursuing BSc and MSc in engineering, architecture, planning and science in this institution. BUET has already produced 2500 graduates in different branches of architecture & engineering . These graduates have already established reputation of BUET all over the world. It has 18 different departments under 5 faculties. It has 6 institutes also. About 661 teachers are teaching in these departments and institutes. It has seven residence halls for the students. 2.University of Dhaka (DU): 

University of Dhaka is known as “Oxford of East”. It is the best and first public university in Bangladesh. On the 1st July 1921, it was opened it’s educational activities. Sir P.J. Hartog was the first Vice-Chancellor of DU. It was situated in the heart of the Dhaka city known as Ramna on 600 acres of land. The University has 83 Departments, 12 Institutes, 13 Faculties,12 Institutes, 20 residential halls, 3 hostels and more than 56 Research Centres. There are about 37018 students and 1992 teachers in this university. 3. Jahangirnagar University(JU):

Jahangirnagar University is called the cultural city of Bangladesh. It is the only 100% residential university of Bangladesh. It was founded in 1970 by the government of Pakistan. That time it was named as “Jahangirnagar Muslim University”. In 1973, it was renamed as “Jahangirnagar University”. It is the kingdom of natural beauty of Bangladesh. Professor Farzana Islam is the first Female VC of Bangladesh from JU.  Jahangirnagar University is situated at Savar, which is 32 k.m. away from the capital city Dhaka. 4. University of Rajshahi(RU): 

The university of Rajshahi is the second largest university of Bangladesh. It was established in 1953 as second public university in East Pakistan. RU played a great role in the national crisis of East Pakistan & present Bangladesh. This university has 58 departments which is organised by 10 faculties. It is situated in the northwestern part of Bangladesh. There are 16 halls in the RU campus. Five halls for female and eleven halls for male students. 5. University of Chittagong:

It is the largest university of Bangladesh in terms of area. The university of Chittagong started its academic activities on 18th November 1966. It is situated in the hilly area of Chittagong which is located as  Fatehpur Union of Hathazari Upazila. It is 22 k.m. away from the Chittagong city. It has around 2400 students and 1000 faculty members. It has 52 departments which is organised by 7 faculty. It has 12 residential halls (8 for male & 4 for female studants). It has a hostel too. 6. Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU):

BAU is the second highest budget university in Bangladesh. It was established in 18th August 1961. BAU’s research in agriculture make a great reputation across Asia. The ratio between teacher & students is lower than any other university in Bangladesh. It has 43 departments under 6 faculties. BAU is situated on the western bank of the Bhramaputra River in Mymensingh. 7. Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST):

SUST was established in 1987. It is the first university which is adopted American credit system in Bangladesh. It is the “Flagship University” of the science and technology university system in Bangladesh. It is situated in Sylhet. It has 27 departments under the 7 schools (Faculties). 8. Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET):

KUET was established as ‘Khulna Engineering College’ under the University of Rajshahi. In 1974, this college is affiliated as the faculty of engineering under the University of Rajshahi. It was converted to BIT in 1986. BIT was converted to KUET on 1st September 2003. It is situated in the northwest part of Khulna city. KUET is organised in 20 depertments under 3 faculties. 9. Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET):

It is established as university in 1st September, 2003. It is situated in Raozan Upazila, Chittagong. It is 25 k.m. away from the Chittagong city. CUET is one of the most prominent engineering university in Bangladesh. It has 15 departments under 5 faculties. It has 6 residential hall (5 halls for male and 1 halls for female). 10. Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET):

It was founded in 1964 as Rajshahi Engineering College. In 2003 it is converted to University. It has 3654 students and 2500 prominent faculty members. It has 28 departments under 4 faculties.
